Thanks to the Cajun for bringing up this most risky of all sectors. Not only is this stuff hard to analyze, there’s also the R&D expenses that incinerate money and the wonderful FDA to kiss up to.
But, everyone loves stocks that go up. Take note that the Naz index is full of these things.
(BBH: 167.61 -1.82%), and (XBI: 51.27 -1.88%) are simple solutions.
Also, there are a shitload of these stocks showing up on my shopping list. Keep in mind that these are also candidates for “adventures in fuckery”……….

this is just what I was looking for, thanks for the list.

July 15th, 2008 at 4:03 pmYes, long EXAC.
July 15th, 2008 at 4:08 pmCPHD gets some respect. Good list, thanks Alpha.
July 15th, 2008 at 4:08 pmdef a good list.
any reason you like cphd in particular boca? I know you’ve followed it for some time.
I have a long standing feud with shed about that stock.
July 15th, 2008 at 4:11 pmMRSA is an awful and insidious p.o.s. disease to deal with and it spreads very easily. A couple of people in my family had it. CPHD equipment provides much quicker testing right at the hospital, instead of having to wait a couple days to get a result from a lab. MRSA is becoming endemic here, if it isn’t endemic where you are, just wait.
I think CPHD is also using it’s MRSA foothold to expand into providing genetic testing at the same hospitals.
Also makes an excellent buyout candidate for one of those big pharma companies heavy on cash and without a good drug pipeline.
JMHO of course.
July 15th, 2008 at 4:19 pmI’d like to buy Danny’s hometown lab, SQNM. Very strong stock.
If the sucker pulls back below 20, I’d be on it.
July 15th, 2008 at 4:22 pmyes, MRSA is bad shit.
That’s why a hospital is a dangerous place to be sick. Seriously.
I’d rather have surgery in my home.
July 15th, 2008 at 4:24 pmBoca, you’re out of CMI aren’t you?
July 15th, 2008 at 4:52 pmAD - as a kid with multiple MDs in his immediate family, let me tell you, quietly, they don’t know shit.
Dead serious.
doctors are like economists, put em in separate rooms, and ask them the same question. Different answers.
Of course, I love my family and think highly of them, all very competent, no lawsuits, but it’s the truth.
Still tho, I’d rather have surgery in a hospital.
sqnm is insane. the machine caught it at 14, but I was like biotech, fuck that. now I’m the asshole.
boca,
The problem with mrsa, from my perspective, is the public misunderstanding of it.
my mom’s an anesthesiologist so this is where I forming my opinion–it’s hers. I don’t want to type out the whole thing with every point (I did it once, I’ll try and find it), but she said it was much of it was BS.
first, I’m sorry to hear of your relatives’ encounter with that wily ‘teria. I hope they are well.
“MRSA is becoming endemic here, if it isn’t endemic where you are, just wait.”
I disagree. mrsa is nothing new, and neither is testing for it. Staph is endemic as well–mrsa is highly communicable, yes, but it’s not a nationwide health issue.
Testing, as you said, requires a cotton swab and 20 hours in the hospital’s lab. That’s cheap. Basically free. Machines are costly for their derived benefit, which according to my mom, isn’t much.
Also, hospital infrastructure: each new machines needs another tech guy and another lesson on how to use, which all relevant personnel need to know. They are loath to use new machines, even if they work better, funnily enough, for the time and cost it takes to learn how to use and all that other stuff.
Does insurance cover the machine test? Basically if insurance doesn’t cover it, no way a hospital will buy it. They are in business to make money. Shh, don’t tell anyone.
The news stories are cnbc esque filled with hype about a killer bug. untrue. the only thing that is true is that is it hard to treat, and highly communicable. It can kill, but so can plain old staph.
“I think CPHD is also using it’s MRSA foothold to expand into providing genetic testing at the same hospitals.”
If that’s true, that’s awesome, but it doesn’t make me want to go long the stock. Tons of companies do the same thing.
buyout candidate is the only reason I like the stock, and that is a great point.
I think mrsa is overblown. It’s not going away, but it isn’t a pressing health concern in the eyes of medicine, as gleaned through my mom.
Also, my mom recommends caveatting her opinion, since she quit her hospital group 2 years ago, but still works at scripps and mercy occasionally.
Mainly she does plastic surgery, which pays her a lot more.
again, jmho
July 15th, 2008 at 4:58 pmDanny, you’re mom does plastic surgery?
WTF happened to you? Won’t she do some work for you, pro bono!@!!
lmao….
July 15th, 2008 at 5:15 pmPay attention, jug sipper.
She’s an anesthesiologist. That’s like the person who administers the white lightning at the hootch.
For a fee.

July 15th, 2008 at 5:49 pmHow the shit do x-ray readers make more dinero than life and death drug administrators?
July 15th, 2008 at 5:53 pmThe average Merrill broker makes more than the average doctor. There’s something wrong with that picture.
July 15th, 2008 at 5:55 pmShed - I already am ridiculously good looking, young, and pretty well off. I don’t think I need to add to the world’s collective problems with a pec implant.
AD - agreed.
my mom said in the 80s she made 300-500 / hr. depending on the surgery / time. And that was in 80s money, which, I understand was worth something at the time.
I heard in the 80s you could take a single dollar, and buy a soda with it, or even TWO candy bars. Now the dollar will buy you a day old donut or a pack of chiclets. But that’s off topic and conjecture, since I don’t remember.
Nowadays/last decade she said that she makes couple hundred per, UNLESS it’s medicare medicaid patient, in which case she makes 60. yes. That’s 60 dollars per hour, instead of 400. Great incentive to take care of gpa.
Not to mention the fact that she estimates 25% of her work is done pro bono to kids with cleft palettes from mexico. Which is admirable of course, but, still. You want money for doing work, in most cases.
So, hospital hours low pay = fuck that, and now she does plastic surgery at 300-500 per hour per clip no matter how ugly or old you are.
Weirdly, she chose to work less and raise me, rather than bank coin. 3 day work week is pretty awesome, but you’re sans massive coin.
Perhaps you’ve heard how ludicrously understaffed hospitals are? Turns out there’s a reason why — doctor’s are underpaid and it pisses them off. Nurses are underpaid and spend more time with patients than the doctors do. The whole thing is a fuckfest of epic proportions.
You should hear her rant about health insurance and healthcare, it’s hilarious.
July 15th, 2008 at 6:51 pmDanny, having seen what MRSA can do, and the amount of work required to eliminate all traces of it from reinfecting the person or infecting me, I’ll respectfully disagree. I could be wrong, but I’ll guess your Mom’s specialty doesn’t have much to do with treating the kind of patient (immune compromised for any number of reasons) who really suffers from an infection like MRSA and can’t fight it off.
My family members have since passed away, thanks for asking though. I’ll let them RIP and refrain from further comments on it. Obviously one interest I have in this stock is personal, and I’m not recommending it as an investment to anyone.
July 15th, 2008 at 7:39 pmEmployee8, CMI? I’m sorry, it’s not ringing a bell for me tonight.
July 15th, 2008 at 7:42 pmIt was solely her opinion and it definitely isn’t her area of expertise. I’m sorry to hear about your family and wasn’t trying in any way to make light of the problem, which is very serious.
July 15th, 2008 at 7:45 pmno problem, Danny. You’re ok, bro.
July 15th, 2008 at 7:49 pmI know a cardiologist who was pulling in more that $600k three years ago. Now, he decided to retire after making only $250k last year from his partnership. It wasn’t worth the aggravation.
