I Beat Collegeby Danny on May 23rd, 2008 at 3:38:43 pm |
I finished school in December, but am walking tomorrow. So cheers to me and my Accounting degree.
…And to Fly’s 32nd gangster year of old-man stairwell pushing. I could be muddying details, but I believe he once mentioned pushing an old-man down a flight of steps at the tender age of 3. The Fly has always been motivated, from what I understand.
I’m pretty excited about my Accounting decision, now that it is all said and done, because Finance is for pussies. What I mean is that with Accounting, I have a much more complete understanding of the business cycle, how companies form the balance sheets you look at, the rules they used to make the numbers, and where the numbers in each column came from.
Finance, from the School’s perspective, while interesting, was more of a theoretical exercise in the aspects of Finance, which is what they seem to focus on. To me, spending inordinate amounts of time on things like CAPM, which is essentially a gay word problem when they give you the risk-free rate and beta and you derive the stock’s value, is about as useless as Ducati’s prized square marble collection.
Deriving a theoretical value based on a treasury rate? For hours? Anyone ever heard Excel? Or an HP 17BII+? How about the fact that that exercise is useless?
What a crock of shit. Then you learn the number of stocks necessary to eliminate as much specific risk in a portfolio as possible (15-30). Boring. Not hands on enough. That’s another reason I love stocks — very hands on.
What a journey it’s been. Surely, you remember college, I’ll bet with fond memories too. You might think, “College was great…that was the last time I did XYZ debaucherous[sic] act”
Don’t make that mistake. I may not be an asshole all day everyday, but dammit, I want to try. Your life is in your hands to make it awesome. That’s what I’ve learned from college.
If I want iBC to be successful, it is up to me to do my part. If I want to make a lot of money, or to travel the world, or to meet my several beautiful wifes, it is up to me to do it. Being apathetic, or unmotivated, or even thinking anything less of myself will only impede my progress.
I see too many of my peers, already, and at such an early age, giving up and resorting to the mundane.
Fuck that.
So, my college speech to my audience here, the majority of which is older than I, is to never forget the feeling of youthful indiscretion, to never forget the feeling of having so much to accomplish, and to go forth with an attitude so ebullient and determined, that everyone else better step the fuck out of the way.

“my several beautiful wives”, be sure and have a pre-nup!!!
May 23rd, 2008 at 3:42:06 pmCongrats, walking the stage is a great feeling.

May 23rd, 2008 at 5:03:16 pmCongrats!
It only sucks if you don’t enjoy what you do.
I may sit in a cube all day, but I thoroughly enjoy what I do and (even more importantly) the people that I work with. Not coincidently, they’re all younger than 47 1/2.
May 23rd, 2008 at 5:22:51 pmPatrick - perhaps. I tend to make my own jobs. Well see if I can carry on that tradition.
dpeez - thanks for the words.
May 23rd, 2008 at 5:42:39 pmEgregious slandering of Finance aside, nice post.
Take it from a guy who never took an accounting course* prior to starting in “Finance,” Accounting is the most important aspect of the deal business.
It’s an ironic fact, but the “finance” part of “Finance, the employment” is thimble-sized, while the “accounting” part is the monster, and the key.
Not that the two aren’t equally important. That’s part of the paradox. After all, the cash money on the barrell head is always “the finance” part of “Finance.”
It’s just that the valuation issues almost always come down to the accounting over the finance.
Here’s another irony. We’d laugh and bitch at the fucking accountants, as if they were our trader servants.
But we went nowhere without ‘em.
