The dips can now be bought. That’s what the true takeaway of this rally has been. It doesn’t mean we can rocket up from here, although I suspect there will be an assault — a failed assault — on Dow 10,000. It does mean that the chaos has been straightened out and the breath has been caught. And even though business is just awful, many stocks reflect awful.
I keep coming back to United States Steel (X) because it is without a doubt the single best barometer of things. Business went from being unbelievably good to unbelievably bad in one quarter! I have never seen things deteriorate so fast. The estimates could not be cut fast enough. But the downgrades did occur fast enough, which is why the stock was able to bounce when it got to $28.
And why not? Right then it had gone down almost as much as it did from 1929 to 1932!
My take is that US Steel will stall in the $40s. It won’t go back to the $20s. If it does, buy it.
That’s the new pattern.
That’s the pattern to play. It is emblematic of pretty much every stock I follow.
It is the template for the rest of the year.
At the time of publication, Cramer had no positions in stocks mentioned.
If Cramer has gone from “sell stocks for the next 5 years” to “Time to Buy the Dips”, I guess its time for this rally to stall & consolidate.
That said, he’ll probably be right after a market rest.
