It’s been one of those lovely weekends, during which I got to stay busy with all kinds of things, except none of those were exactly what I wanted to do. Joy!
So anyway, taking a look back at Friday’s options activity…starting off with the put/call ratio, which rose fractionally to a rather unexciting 1.15 and thus firmly remained in ‘the chop’.
Updating the tracking virtual trades…the SPY 84. calls from Thursday gained a handy 20% on Friday. To protect these profits, the calls are now proud owners of a trailing stop. fwiw, futures are down about 0.5% right now…
Individual Items:
- VIX continues to make new lows, approaching low 30’s!
- Downside hedging seen in UPS (3:1 put:call volume) ahead of earnings on the 23rd.
- Continued call buying in NUAN after a 2nd straight day of buyout rumours…
- Other buyout rumors & big call volumes in: FLIR, OCR, RVBD, SYK
- MU call volume up big after an encouraging report on DRAM prices.
- POT volatility continues to decline, despite earnings on the 23rd. Current IV% is below the 6-month average and at levels not seen since early February. (MOS/MON earnings were non-events, so it could be an added effect from those. I’m personally tempted to put some sort of credit diagonal spread here…eying long Jun09 100./short May09 90…)
Miscellanea:
- The Name of the Year voting is down to the Final 2, in case you’re interested. My pick was ‘Crystal Metheny’ in the semis, but she got blown out by ‘Barkevious Mingo’, who has the backing of the entire LSU football nation.
- Another voting thing, this one by CNET for the best Web 2.0 Apps of 2009. See all the cool shit you’re missing out on the web: Webware 100
- Speaking of cool…tried out tumblr this weekend. It’s essentially a middle-ground b/w a ‘regular’ blog and twitter…and is a winner in my book. Say bye-bye, Blogger!
- Enjoyed my 2x $2 days inside The PPT. Going from iBC, It was quite the paradigm shift in terms of tone…but once you get used to that, it’s an eye-opening experience. Too bad that stocks are for asshats.
- Where is the JakeGint tab?? I have this super-awesome idea about nationalizing health-care that I need to urgently discuss with him!! *laugh*

5* DP.
But, um where is the long promised post on explaining options?
Or was that just a campaign promise?
No no, not just a campaign promise…it’s been planned since before the elections.
It’s coming, slowly but surely…but ran out of time again this weekend – I was trying to allude to this with my first sentence…
decent article re: options for beginners

Ah well 5* regardless
shhh, DMG, don’t tell them! Then I have nothing to contribute!
The link has good basic info, but not only is that site ass-ugly, it’s also a veiled advertisement for one of those ‘advisory’ sites, you know the ones with giant, get-your-attention headers and flashy text promising untold riches as long as you pay them ‘x’ amount and follow along.
Plenty of excellent resources out there on the interwebs…the CBOE itself is an excellent place to start:

ps.
I wonder when the PG header will get changed back to our usual one. Even though it says that the ‘Trials & Executions’ will go until the 21st, we’ve already finished with it, no?
DPZ – just a little Whore d’ouvre until you get the
maine coarse (robster) out.

Tell me where is Gandalf, for I much desire to speak with him…
Sorry your quote reminded me of this excellent ditty.
See especially 1:15 or so….

My banner is ready, not sure when it’s going to be unveiled, however.

Wow, that was…interesting.
But I do all of a sudden have a desire for an all-day LoTR movie marathon. Hit the lights!
DPeez: Enter the New Jacksonians.
Enjoy. I have another to come later.
______
Good shit.
First read your title as ‘Enter the New Jakesonians’…the real title is not as cool, but the content is excellent.
Jackson, to me, has been a somewhat forgotten president…my education painted him as a butcher of Indians; turns out there was more to the man than just that!
